Dare To Be Different

Spring is over!  Since Texas summer brings 100 degree weather, we find it best to utilize every bit of cool daylight in the spring to accomplish big projects. We sure have been busy and find ourselves slowing down a bit for the summer.

So here I am, writing about homesteading once again on the homeschool blog.  It's a part of our lives.  All of us have recently developed an interest in self sufficiency all at once. All in different ways.  It's nice to have one goal as a family but also have different ideas and hands contributing to make it all work together.

Katie's animal kingdom has been growing.  For an inspiring veterinarian, this is what life is about for her. She has much excitement she would like to share about her life as a homeschooler!

She spends her early mornings under a beautiful Texas sky listening to her Roosters crow feeling a gentle breeze while she tends to them.  The best part of her lifestyle is the excitement of what new life will await her just outside the backdoor.  About 6 new chicks have hatch here lately.  She's mothered them all!  Her Ewe (female sheep) is pregnant.  As we've watch her belly expand and her udders fill, we've excitedly peeked out the window in the mornings to see if there's a new little lamb on the ground. Maybe 2?!  The cats eagerly await for her at the front porch every morning knowing a kind little girl with a soft gentle voice is coming to make them feel special with a good petting and a nice meal.  She can also put them in place if they get outta line!  Its not just the cats and the chickens, its all her animals that perk up with excitement when they see her coming.

After she's soaked up a little vitamin D outside, she comes in and turns her computer on to start her math on the kitchen table in front of the door.  Leaving the glass door open to let the light shine in, she starts her Math. As she does her Math, she typically sings a new song she's made up for the day.  She has set times to study, but  the possibilities of the day are luring her to finish her work in a timely manner.  She asks questions about what she's learning about and strives to make the best grade possible.  Katie loves to see her school work without mistakes. She screams for joy when she's finished and aced a test!

While she's doing her work, she hears the house alive. Mom is clanking dishes in the kitchen and the water is running.  The washer is spinning.  The early morning light is beaming into the house in certain spots that are familiar to her.  She is comfortable and her mind is at ease. She knows she can ask a question at any time about her school work.  She awaits lunch because she knows her and Mom will talk while making lunch in the kitchen.  She will talk about fun things, serious things, and all things in between. During her breaks in between subjects, she gets to make crafts with her own hands.  Bath salts, soaps, jewelry, baby dolls, quilts, etc.  She wonders what new fun thing she will learn next. This young girl is confident because she knows how to make things with her own hands, to get up in the middle of the night to bottle feed a hungry animal, and raise her own food. If she doesn't know an answer, she is smart enough to find it.  This is life and school all in one place.  All of her needs are being met at home so she is satisfied and longs to be there.

Every Friday this gal will meet with a group of friends who have similar lifestyles.  All ages will mingle together.  The older helping the younger.  She will watch a young teen grab a mother's baby and swaddle it.  She knows the blessings and cruelty of the world and the church and encounters it.  When she has a question, one of her parents are always feet away from her ready to answer that question, give advice, or to protect her.

Remembering the day we decided to homeschool, it was a challenge for us to dare to be different.  I worried about what the world, my family, or friends would think.  Would she be odd?  Rejected?  Unsocialized? Unlearned?  If we are good parents, all of us want what's better than best for our children.

I can't see ahead.  As of now, we are seeing the results of homeschooling to be remarkable!  We couldn't be more proud of her!

"I want to say our sheep had a lamb today! To me it's so exciting! To believe that I am going to walk out my back door and see a baby lamb being born and then walking around in the yard. It's a fun experience for me! I like to be homeschooled because I get to spend time with my family and friends.  I get to take a week or 2 off to see my family that come in from out of state.  Thanks for reading our blog!"~Katie 9 years old

Some sweet moments going on this morning!
